SULLIVAN, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The Sullivan County Sheriff’s office thanked the Indiana Department of Corrections for a recent donation of a handmade podium and conference room table.
According to the Indiana Department of Corrections Executive Director of the Construction Services Division Kevin Orme, the donated items were made by incarcerated people as a side benefit of other production work the program does, with no tax dollars used to create the items.
“Anytime we have a county opening a new jail building, we always try to donate something,” Orme said. “They are good partners for us.”
Sullivan Sheriff Jason Bobbitt said he and his office appreciate the donated items.
“He reached out to me a few weeks ago, they delivered it and set it up and put it together,” Bobbit said. “We’re very grateful for it, it was a wonderful gift, beautiful artwork and woodwork.”
The podium and table were reportedly handcrafted by incarcerated individuals at the Pendleton Correctional Facility in Madison County. Sheriff Bobbitt said a donated office chair was embroidered at the Carlisle Prison in Sullivan County.
Sheriff Bobbitt said the new facility is on track to open this spring with plans for a ribbon cutting and open house coming in the near future.
