SULLIVAN, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — More than nine months after the deadly tornado tore through Sullivan, the city park has received another upgrade to its equipment.
The playground was built to try and revitalize the park after the devastation that took place in March. Originally, construction began in early 2023, with plans for it to be completed not long after that.
However, the tornado caused everything to change.
Kristi Burkhart is the president of Heart of Sullivan, and she expresses the importance of having safe places to play for children.
“We know that quality of life is important for any community, and we want to make sure our children have safe places to play, and families can get out and enjoy the park. It’s free for families to come out and enjoy, get outside, get exercise, and learn along the way,” said Burkhart.
This playground was built because of the noticeable ageing and damage that some of the equipment have. With all of the other renovations that have come recently to the pool, officials want to try and treat the park the same way.
Burkhart says that the continued improvements to this community will only cause the younger generation to want to stay their whole lives.
“This town has a special place in my heart. I always want to leave the town in a better place for our next generations. It’s about creating an environment that children want to grow up in and they want to stay and live in their adult life,” added Burkhart.
This was possible due to a grant given to Heart of Sullivan by the Wabash Valley Community Foundation in 2022.
