SHELBURN, Ind. (WTWO/WAWVO — The Shelburn Town Council met Thursday night for an organizational meeting but was met with backlash from the community in attendance.
Jay Southwood was voted in as president and Aaron Lewis as Vice President.
At the beginning of the meeting, Melissa Copeland, Town Clerk-Treasurer expressed safety and security concerns of her office at Town Hall. She presented security footage, which she said shows two individuals gaining access to her locked office.
She said as an elected official, she wanted to bring this matter to the attention of the public.
“Since taking office there was a lot of keys out everywhere. We don’t know who has keys to all of the buildings in town. I don’t think the town hall needs everyone to have access. There’s money, there’s checks, there’s important documents there. So I just asked the council if they’d make a motion that all of the keys be returned. Only the three people who work there on a daily basis have keys,” Copeland said.
Shelburn resident, Bryan Stormes, said the video speaks for itself, “Corruption’s coming out and some of the board members don’t like that, some of the board members don’t want to listen to what the town has to say, and it showed tonight. It’s going to get a lot worse before it gets any better. but I think, hopefully we’ll get it taken care of.”
Jared Miller is newly elected to the council. After a heated meeting, he asked the community for patience but assured them their concerns would be heard.
“I just want to be on the council and try to give everybody in the community a voice and try to hear all of these complaints that they have and try to please as many people as I can,” Miller said. “You’re not going to get everybody happy but I’m trying to please the majority of the people and address some important situations,” he added.
The next board meeting was originally scheduled for January 9th but at tonight’s meeting the board mentioned that date will be moved.
