TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A generous gift from a longtime university supporter will create a new endowed scholarship at Indiana State University that aims to help first-generation college students majoring in music.
The Judy L. Brett Endowed Scholarship for the School of Music was created from a $150,000 donation from Judy Brett. Judy, along with her husband Dr. Bill Brett are longtime supporters of ISU and it’s students as Dr. Bill Brett has endowed a scholarship with the university that focuses on science-based majors.
While any music major can apply for the scholarship, the awarding process will favor first generation college attendees.
Judy said she was inspired to make the gift to the school after hearing a performance of the University Chorale at Sycamore Manor.
“The return on investment always pays great dividends when helping students,” said Brett. “Although Bill was very much a scientist, we have supported many different ventures in the arts. You shouldn’t have one discipline without the other.”
Judy received the March On! Award in 2020 for her philanthropic efforts. Her husband Bill was the chairperson of the Life Sciences Department at ISU for 15 years.
“Indiana State University is thankful for donors like Judy, who financially support students pursuing their passions and help ensure they walk across the stage in four years to get their degrees,” ISU President Dr. Deborah Curtis said. “The power of philanthropy is evident through the longstanding relationship between Indiana State and the Bretts.”
