TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO-WAWV) — A Vigo County jury finds Vernon Eversole, guilty of all counts, including murder. It’s for the 2017 shooting death of David Carroll who was shot to death at his home on North 18th street in Terre Haute.
After nearly six hours of deliberations, a Vigo Count Jury found Vernon Eversole guilty of all counts, including murder, for the October 2017 shooting death of 34 year old David Carroll. Deputy Prosecutor Jason Saunders presented the case on behalf of the State of Indiana. After the jury returned their verdicts on the underlying charges, the State sought a sentencing enhancement for the use of a firearm
“This is justice that has been a long time in coming. The hard work of the Terre Haute Police Department and of Deputy Prosecutor Saunders means that the second person involved in Mr. Carroll’s death has now been held responsible. He is facing a minimum fifty (50) year sentence for his crimes and we will be asking for a significantly higher sentence for this habitual criminal.” said Prosecutor Terry Modesitt. “We hope this second conviction brings some closure and peace to his family and friends that have been waiting for this day.”
A second person, Ashley Johnson, was previously charged with murder in the case; however, in 2018, she pleaded guilty to robbery resulting in bodily injury, and the murder charge was dismissed. She was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
This is the second murder trial in Vigo County this week resulting in guilty verdicts. This is the first time in over twenty years that two murder trials occurred simultaneously in the county.
