DAVIESS COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — To assist area residents who may be struggling with housing, the Our Community Foundation has awarded a $10,000 grant to the Daviess County Salvation Army.
According to officials, the grant funding comes as part of the foundation’s Daviess County Stable Housing Competitive Grant Program. As part of the competition, area charitable organizations submitted plans which were then reviewed by the foundation grant committee, a 22-member local board, who chose the Salvation Army’s proposal.
“We reviewed data and trends and that told us there are more and more people in our community who face challenges in staying in their homes. That’s because of increased costs for the basics, like rent, food and household supplies, transportation, and childcare,” Foundation Board member and Chair of the Grant Committee Travis Schaffer said. “This need for families and seniors to have some help securing stable housing is on the rise. Because Our Community Foundation is flexible and local, we can shift to direct funding where it is most needed in Daviess County.”
In 2022 the Emergency Assistance Program distributed over $10,000 in financial assistance, benefiting 99 Daviess County residents ranging in age from infants to seniors. This year, the $10,000 grant is expected to provide support for approximately 50 to 100 households, depending on the size of the household and their specific needs. Salvation Army Service Extension Director Billie Kay says additional funding for the program will be raised through the Salvation Army’s Christmas Kettle campaign.
“The amount available through the program is fully dependent on fundraising efforts in Daviess County,” added Kay. “And with requests for assistance on the rise in Daviess County, this grant will really help provide it. What a blessing to be able to serve so many in Daviess County with this very generous grant.”
