VINCENNES, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The Watermelon Festival has been a Knox County tradition for many decades.
It represents the rich agricultural history of that area. Jamie Neal is the president of the Knox County Chamber of Commerce and she discusses the true meaning of this event.
“This is kind of our end-of-summer bash for the families, and community right before they go back to school. It’s the Knox County Chamber Watermelon Festival. We have been doing this for well over 30 years and we are excited to be able to offer this fun event to our community.”
Sparklight was the main sponsor of this year’s festival. They sponsor numerous other festivals in Knox County as well. Allen Massey is the Manager of Field Operations for Spraklight and discusses why this is the main event for this area.
“I was born and raised here. I’ve been a member of the community my whole life. It’s just a really good event for the community.”
There were many different food and retail vendors at this event. None more vibrant than the coveted Snowie Bus.
Gena Drake owns the bus and tells why festivals like this are so important.
“It’s just a great environment for everyone. Everyone is happy at festivals and really seems to enjoy themselves at places like this. This is what brought me to this business because I love people, I love to be social, and it brings a lot of happiness for me and everyone around me.”
The Watermelon Festival continues on Saturday, August 5 with many different pageants and their infamous seed-spitting contest.
