SULLIVAN COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A blind Sullivan County veteran spent more than a month climbing and then descending the world’s tallest mountain.
Lonnie Bedwell came off Mount Everest earlier on Friday. Bedwell said at times the climb was very scary. He and his climbing crew with Sightless Summits face tough weather conditions and at times, Bedwell’s oxygen mask failed to work properly.
Bedwell said that despite all the challenges, the climb proves if people work together, they can accomplish so very much.
After 41 days of climbing up the mountain and coming back down, Bedwell is now resting safely in a hotel in Katmandu.
“I’m still a little tired and looking forward to my first good night’s sleep in a warm bed and stuff. My face has a few spots on it that are wind burnt, also a little bit of frostbite,” Bedwell said.
