TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)– The Wabash Valley Road Runners celebrated spring on Saturday with the 28th annual “Swamp Stomp” event at Hawthorn Park.
Around 150 people signed up for the event, which included a five-mile run, a four-mile walk and a one-mile “fun run.” President of the organization Mike Morris said that many participants were gearing up for the Indianapolis Mini-Marathon, which takes place next month.
“We have had a program for the last several years, Trained in Terre Haute, where people train to go to the Indianapolis Half-Marathon,” he said. “This comes a little bit before that, obviously that’s the first part of May here, so they’ll get a little racing under their belt.”
Morris said they had about 180 people participating in the Trained in Terre Haute program this year.
The group also hosted a post-race taco breakfast bar. Morris said the turnout Saturday was satisfying, and he was happy to see the community of runners continuing to grow.
“People come out and they got a lot of different reasons for what we’re doing, but they’re usually working to do the best they can or their personal best for whatever their goals are,” he said.
“The road runners come and go, some move away, but it’s just been a good organization with good people.”
