SULLIVAN CO. Ind., (WTWO/WAWV) — Progress continues on the construction of the new Sullivan County Corrections Facility and Sheriff’s Department.
Sullivan County Sheriff Jason Bobbitt says the walls are up and the roof is almost complete but construction crews are awaiting the delivery of the steel cells. The current jail was built in the early ’80s and was designed for just 34 inmates. Several years later, they added bunks to create a 54-bed facility.
The new jail is currently projected to be around 180 to 190 beds. The completion date is unknown at this time, but Bobbitt is looking forward to the modern amenities the new facility will offer.
“There is a pod system in the new jail which will be manned twenty-four seven. They will operate and open every door in the facility. That’s going to take the burden off the dispatch to just focus on 911 calls. There is constant visual in every block from the tower person,” Bobbitt explained.
Bobbitt added that the new facility will be an asset to Sullivan County as it will allow deputies to respond to calls quicker, with easy access to U.S. 41.
He said his next progression update meeting is scheduled for the morning of January 12.
