VERMILLION COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Indiana State Police say they’ve finished their investigation into the events of November 17 at South Vermillion High School.
That day, Deputy Tim DisPennett, a 19-year veteran of the Vermillion County Sheriff’s Department who had been teaching a law enforcement vocational class at the school reportedly fired his service revolver after mistakenly grabbing the wrong weapon during a lesson. The bullet grazed a South Vermillion High School senior.
The incident caused the building to go on lockdown as officials determined what happened and confirmed that no students were in danger.
Indiana State Police Public Information Officer Sgt. Matt Ames said now that the investigation has concluded, the information has been passed along to the Vermillion County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
At the time, Ames explained that investigators would be talking to all parties involved. “We’re doing interviews with all the students who were present in the room,” Ames said. “We’ll be interviewing the deputy that was involved in the situation. Once that’s completed the crime scene investigators will go in, take all the information, and at the conclusion of the investigation it will be turned over to the Vermillion County Prosecutor’s Office for review.”
DisPennett has been placed on administrative leave, which police say is customary in these types of situations.
This is a developing story, we’ve reached out to the Vermillion County Prosecutor’s Office for comment regarding what happens next.
