ROBINSON, Ill. (WTWO/WAWV) — Officials said that students are safe, and a student was kept out of the classroom following a threat made to a Robinson, Illinois middle school.
According to a post on the Robinson Community Unit School District 2, school officials and police were made aware of the threat on Tuesday, November 8.
Robinson Police Chief Chad Weaver explained that the district has two school resource officers which helped the police as well as the school organization to be made aware of the threats quickly. Weaver credited the school’s threat assessment protocols for a smooth investigation into the threat that was made.
“We’ve probably gone through the steps of the threat assessment plan 2-3 times already this school year,” Weaver said. “That’s because we’d rather be extra cautious and make sure we determine if a threat is credible.”
Weaver said this specific investigation was quick due to the identity of the student making the threat being readily known. Weaver added that once officers determine who has made a threat, a search of the student’s home will take place as well as interviews with people related to the situation to determine how dangerous a threat may be.
“We knew that student was not going to be in school that day, and we were able to determine where that student was, and keep tabs on them,” Weaver said.
While the police were confident the student wasn’t going to the school that day, extra patrol officers were on site as a precaution. “Some of that is precautionary, but it also adds a level of comfort for folks arriving at the school,” Weaver said.
Weaver said as the world has continued to change, and threats like this have become more common, the school and his department have made changes to confront these issues.
“Five years ago, maybe nothing would have been done in response to this threat,” said Weaver. “We have a good working relationship with this district, some other districts and departments might not have that, but it makes things go smoothly.”
Superintendent Quick as well as Chief Weaver thanked the individuals who reached out to both the school and law enforcement to report this threat.
“The safety of our students is our top priority, and we appreciate the partnership and support of the community.”
