TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — 1133 fallen veterans from the Wabash Valley were honored on Friday evening with a special mural dedication.
This project aims to serve as a reminder to appreciate their ultimate sacrifice.
The painting is on the front of the Veterans Memorial Museum of Terre Haute; the veterans’ names are from surrounding Indiana and Illinois counties and hang proudly. The years of service range from World War I to the present day.
“The main reason for doing this is so people will never forget the sacrifices of those men and women. That’s the main reason,” said owner Brian Mundell.
Veteran’s Day 2022 also marks the 10th anniversary of the Veterans Memorial Museum. Inside the building, multiple exhibits showcase the Wabash Valley’s connection to history.
Mundell said the timing for the mural was right.
“My goal is that we not only remember our veterans on Veterans Day but every day. If it wasn’t for our veterans, we could do the things we do on a daily basis,” he said.
Gordon Powell SR., an army veteran and the Sergeant of Arms for the American Post Legion 346, attended this special ceremony. He said the unveiling was a ‘humbling experience’ and that Vigo County was fortunate to have something so significant.
“The names on there are being recognized from all parts of our district and outstanding counties because they want to be remembered. This is one way we can remember,” he said.
The museum is located at 1129 Wabash Avenue and is open from noon to 4 pm on Saturday.
