TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – You can now cast a ballot for this year’s midterm election as the early voting period is underway in Indiana.
The early voting period will run until November 7th which is the day before Election Day.
Locally, Vigo County has about 70,000 registered voters. Although it’s highly unlikely that voter turnout will be close that 70,000 number, many voters are expected to get out and hit the polls.
Vigo County Clerk Brad Newman said that they’ve seen a good turnout for the first day of early voting. He encouraged the use of early voting, especially if you can’t make it on Election Day.
“We’ve got to get them out to the polls,” Newman explained. “We want them to come out and be a part of the process and have their voices heard.”
In Vigo County, you can cast an early vote at the Haute City Center from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. or at the Vigo County Annex from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays. No matter where you live in the county, you have the option to vote at either location. This same principle will apply on Election Day. You’ll be free to cast a ballot at any polling location in the county.
“You can vote at any of them no matter where you live at in the county,” Newman said. “Regardless of where you live, you can vote anywhere when we have an election center open.”
The ability to cast a ballot is a sacred right. Newman further emphasized the importance of exercising your right to vote.
“Not everybody can sit at the table, but they can decide who sits at that table to make the best decisions for them,” Newman stated. “It’s imperative that people go out and exercise this right.”
Vigo County Resident Sylvester Hammond said that it’s good to see people vote and want to be involved in their community.
“You have that opportunity to vote, you should take advantage of it,” Hammond said.
