GREENE CO, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — During During National Infant Mortality Awareness Month in September, Good Samaritan Hospital is focusing on bringing awareness to the rate of babies that die each year before they reach their first birthday.
Infant Mortality is the #1 indicator of health status in the world. In 2020, the rate in Indiana was 6.6, while the U.S. rate was 5.4. Indiana ranks 9th among states with the highest infant mortality rates.
Good Samaritan received Safety PIN (Protecting Indiana’s Newborns) funding from the State Department of Health beginning April 1st, 2021 to launch our Safety PIN Services.
“Our program allows us to extend the services and care we offer during a woman’s pregnancy and the first year with her baby. Our Perinatal Navigator supports mothers in accessing healthcare, navigating resources, and assisting in overcoming socioeconomic barriers. Our goal is to reduce infant mortality by keeping families safe, healthy, and supported,” Casandra DeBord, Project Director of Good Samaritan’s Safety PIN Program said.
