TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)– Dozens of people made the trip to the Wabash Valley Fairgrounds on Saturday, to attend a free educational seminar. The seminar discussed fall gardening techniques from the Wabash Valley Master Gardeners Association.
The event included speakers, live demonstrations and vendors, as well as a tour of the organization’s “Giving Garden,” which is located on the fairgrounds.
Member Shannon Giles said the group usually hosted a seminar in the spring, but they shifted the date this year.
“We decided to move it to the fall this year because we really wanted people to understand that gardening is a year round activity,” Giles said. “It doesn’t just start in the spring and end in the summer. There are things you can do year-round, there are ways you can work in the soil even up to the winter, so we thought this is a good opportunity to do it.”
One of the speakers was Tabby Flinn, who talked about edible landscaping.
“My topic was edible landscaping, so how you can incorporate fruit and vegetable plants into your landscaping because they are just as beautiful as ornamental flowers are,” Flinn said.
Flinn, the agriculture and natural resources educator for the Vigo County Purdue Extension, said her favorite part of the event was the community.
“The most memorable part for me is the community that comes together,” Flinn said. “Everybody coming in and working together and sharing their knowledge is a really special thing.?
President Era Nichols said she hopes to do similar fall seminars in the future, and said she was excited about the turnout for the event.
“I believe their are five counties that are represented here that came from far distances to see what we have to offer,” Nichols said.
