VERMILLION COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A GPS tracking app led deputies to the scene of a rollover crash Sunday morning in Vermillion County, Indiana.
Vermillion County Sheriff Mike Phelps said that the initial call to 911 came just before 3 a.m. Sunday from the “Life 360” app, indicating that a crash had been detected on State Road 63 near North Vermillion High School.
James Philips, 58, of Paris, Ill. was reportedly driving his pickup truck southbound on SR 63 and entered the median when Philips fell asleep at the wheel. According to investigating officers, the vehicle traveled approximately 1,100 feet before entering the southbound lanes again. Once it returned to the road, the pickup had overcorrected and rolled 2-3 times before coming to a stop in the ditch.
A Sheriff’s Deputy reported that Philips said he had fallen asleep at the wheel, and showed no signs of impairment. Philips was wearing a seatbelt and was uninjured in the crash, refusing treatment following an examination by EMS on scene.
