SULLIVAN, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – Mental Health America of West Central Indiana hosted a ‘Kindness Rock Painting’ event at Sullivan City Park on Wednesday.
Participants were able to paint a rock in any positive manner that they chose. Nic Ervin was one of a few in attendance who painted a rock. Ervin chose to paint affirming messages such as ‘You Matter’ and ‘Help is Here’ on her rocks.
“Hopefully it comes across the right person because you never know when someone needs to hear something,” Ervin explained. “Not a lot of people are open about their own mental health.”
It was important for Ervin to attend the event as she opened up about her own mental struggles in the past. She said that her being there could potentially help someone else who may be struggling.
“Mental health has always been a contributing factor to several events in my life,” Ervin said. “So people being aware and cautious of their own is pretty important.”
MHAWCI has hosted numerous events like this across the valley, but this is the first in Sullivan County. Chief Program Officer Rachel Reed said that it’s important from them to spread mental health awareness and suicide prevention across the valley.
“Suicide prevention is something that is important in all of our communities and affects all of our communities,” Reed said. “Having the kindness and the hope in all of our communities is really important.”
The next painting event will be held on July 28th at 5:00 p.m. in Deming Park.
