TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – A year after his death, family, friends and the community continue to honor the life of Detective Greg Ferency.
He was a member of the Terre Haute Police Department for three decades and a member of the FBI. Ferency was killed in an ambush in Terre Haute in July. More details can be found below.
A year later, a celebration of life is planned at Afterburner Brewing Company. A special beer will be brewed described as American style, smooth, crisp with warrior hops.
The beer was made thanks to the help of stories shared by friends and family of Greg.
“Based on the stories of Greg’s company, we decided this would be the best way to honor him,” Greg Hrovat, with Afterburner, said.
The batch has not been brewed yet.
The celebration will also include local celebrity bartenders and food trucks in the parking lot.
Part of the proceeds will help fund Project Never Broken, a non-profit organization that was started in Ferency’s honor. Their goal is to support the law enforcement community through, help, hope and healing.
Executive Director and Founder, Shelly Klingerman, said the idea for celebrating instead of mourning came from after some much needed reflection.
“Instead of it being a heavy day, we’re going to intention about celebrating everything that people liked about him and making it a happy day,” Klingerman said.
The beer’s name is unique, Nunquam Fractum, which translates to never broken.
Owners of Afterburner Brewing Company, Hrovat and John Knull, were approached about this project due to their community involvement. As veterans with a strong connection to law enforcement, they said this was a perfect collaboration.
“It’s going to be a great event. As I said, we like to support the community in any way we can. Hopefully, we can raise a lot of money for the organization,” Knull said.
Again, the celebration of life is planned for July 7, from 12 pm to 8 pm, at Afterburner Brewing Company on Ninth Street. Klingerman hopes that anyone who attends leaves with a sense of gratitude.
“People liked to spend time with him and that’s exactly what we’re going to do on July 7 is just to celebrate and do what Greg would be doing,” Klingerman said. “All of this is intended to keep this year and date on the happy side.”
