VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WAWV/WTWO) – Vigo County Parks and Recreation Department celebrated the grand opening of Vigo County’s newest park, Ruble Park.
April 30th community collaborators came together to speak about the unique features of 800-acre park. 200 acres of prairie and wildflowers and 10 miles of trails, are amongst the many features at Ruble Park.
The park is named in honor of a former Vigo County Parks Superintendent Keith Ruble, who served for 39 years.
Ivy Tech Community College Terre Haute announced they will serve as the trailhead and main entrance to Ruble Park. In partnership with the Vigo County Commissioner the main campus built a new shelter and restroom facility on the southwest corner to serve park patrons.
Collaborators cut a long piece of grass which symboled a ribbon, and opened up the park to Ivy Tech’s race participants as it hosted its 6th annual 5K. More than 50 participants in Ivy Tech’s 5K and were among the first to experience Ruble Parks trails.
Ivy Tech Terre Haute Foundation Executive Director Rachel Mullinnix said the park will be a great addition to the south side of Vigo County.
“It will help with the overall quality of life in Southern Vigo County resident,” Mullinnix said. “We also think it will be something quite appealing to our future students.”
Ivy Tech has plans to extend Ruble Park paths onto the west side of it’s campus leading to Dixie Bee Elementary in the near future.
