TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A local hospital is being recognized for its care for patients in outpatient oncology.
The oncology services department at Terre Haute Regional Hospital has been named a 2021 Guardian of Excellence Award winner.
The recognition comes from Press Ganey a company that focuses on healthcare consumer and worker engagement. The award means Regional achieved the 95th percentile or above in performance in patient experience for outpatient oncology.
Doctors say it’s an honor to do this work that is so important.
“People ask ‘isn’t it a difficult thing to deal with cancer issues all the time?’,” said Thomas Schmitz, MD, radiation oncology department at Terre Haute Regional Hospital. “And there are certainly some sad and some challenging issues but we can almost always help in some way and our staff really wholeheartedly believes that.”
“We keep up the team spirit,” Medical Director of the oncology department at Regional, Ashis Chakrabarti, MD said. “We stimulate our team members to continue to provide great service which should start from the front window to the time when the patient leaves our facility.”
“It’s an absolute teamwork. Without our excellent team and close association between our radiation oncology and medical oncology, this would not have been possible,” added Chakrabarti.
“Press Ganey is honored to recognize Terre Haute Regional Hospital and the oncology services department as one of the nation’s leaders in patient experience,” said Patrick T. Ryan, chairman and chief executive officer, Press Ganey. “This award reflects an unwavering commitment to earn the trust and loyalty of patients throughout unimaginable challenges. We are humbled by the hospital’s incredible efforts, and their ability to adapt to the imperatives of COVID-19 on top of the increasing demand for consumerism in healthcare.”
This is the 5th year that Regional has received this award.
