CARMEL, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Authorities in Indiana say two newborn infants were surrendered to safe haven baby boxes in the last few days.
The Safe Haven Baby Boxes have been placed at fire stations across Indiana where the mother of a newborn can safely and anonymously surrender a newborn child that they are unwilling or unable to care for.
One of the babies was dropped off at Carmel Fire Department station number 45 on Tuesday. The infant was a healthy baby boy, and reports from the hospital indicated he is doing well.
“I do also want to thank the mother who made the very important decision to surrender this baby. The Safe Haven Baby law is a legal, safe, and courageous way to care for an infant that the mother may not be able to take care of. And so, we’re super proud of this program,” said Carmel Fire Chief David Haboush.
Officials say the child was surrendered and firefighters retrieved the baby in less than a minute from the baby box.
