VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A Terre Haute man is heading back to Illinois in custody to face charges of bank robbery after being arrested Friday.
Indiana State Police Sgt. Matt Ames confirms that Corey L. Ellerbe of Terre Haute was arrested following a traffic stop at the 10-mile marker of I-70.
According to the Effingham Police Department, officers were called to First Mid Bank and Trust in Effingham at 10:09 a.m., a call had come in reporting that a male subject had entered the bank and demanded cash, inferring to the teller that he possessed a weapon. However, no weapon was displayed during the incident. Police stated that the subject then fled in a vehicle with an undetermined amount of cash.
The Effingham Police Department then broadcast a description of the suspect and his vehicle to other jurisdictions as they tracked his movements across the state line into Indiana.
We are very thankful for the assistance from our community – multiple people called to give information, and that helped tremendously to narrow down direction of travel and allow Law Enforcement to safely take this subject into custody in such a short amount of time. This just highlights how important it is to have a good partnership between Law Enforcement and the citizens we serve. Remember ‘If You See It, Say It!’
Effingham Police Chief Jason McFarland
According to Sgt. Ames, an ISP Trooper pulled Ellerbe over. Ames added that once it was determined that the driver was the suspect being sought, he was placed under arrest and taken to the Vigo County Jail to await extradition back to Illinois. Chief McFarland also thanked the numerous other law enforcement agencies who assisted in the incident.
Officials in Effingham County have charged Ellerbe with the class 1 felony charge of aggravated robbery, with a bond set at $250,000.
