TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – The City of Terre Haute Human Relations Commission hosted its annual youth summit in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Students grades 6th through 12th attended the workshop at Chances and Services for Youth in Terre Haute. Workshops focused on giving youth more insight into diversity, equity and inclusion.
Keynote Speaker Freddie Silveria led several of the workshops. He said that these workshops help build a connection amongst those in attendance.
“It’s an opportunity to understand that we’re better together,” Silveria said. “We’re helping create communities of care and understand a motto that it’s hard to hate someone whose story you know.”
The summit began with the group breaking down parts of Dr. King’s famous ‘I Have a Dream’ speech. Terre Haute Human Relations Commission Executive Director Jordan Lough said that this will give today’s youth more insight on Dr. King’s goal of equality.
“If you’re not familiar with your history of where you came from, it’s very hard to set a standard and expectation to know where you’re going to head,” Lough said.
Lough explained that that hopes the summit will inspire the youth to not only continue Dr King’s dream, but to also set their own path for bringing more equality to the world.
“It can take just one, one person that can bring change,” Lough said. “I want for them to not just dream Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream, but to dream their own dream.”
