TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Indiana State University hosted its 15th Annual Indiana Bat Festival Satuday, which welcomed families of all ages to receive information about the animals.
Families were able to visit informational exhibits, participate in children’s activities and even get to set their eyes on live bats. Those in attendance got to see other animals as well including snakes.
Sharon Peterson, owner of Incredible Bats Inc., said the United States is home to about 45 different species of living bats. The organization’s goal is to educate people on the many benefits of this animal, including eating bugs like mosquitos and crop bugs.
“My whole premise of my company is to educate the public about this and of course children have a natural curiosity,” Peterson said. “They’re not inherently afraid of things like adults are.”
Peterson said there are over 1,000 species of bats in the world.
