CASEY, Ill. (WTWO/WAWV) — A group of Vietnam War veterans will be reuniting this week in Casey, Ill., 50 years after serving together in the same platoon.
Veterans said they have travelled from all across the country to attend the reunion. After serving together in Vietnam, the group of men said they consider themselves to be family.
“It’s a closeness you can’t really explain,” veteran Don Stephen said. “But, it’s a brotherhood.”
The group of veterans grew very close during their years serving together in the war.
“We love each other,” veteran Joseph Hill said. “A lot of us went through a whole lot over there. And even in our personal lives we’ve had problems. It’s just a time to release that tension and some of those bad memories.”
Members of the group fought in the war when they were in their late teens and early 20’s, but today are in their later 60’s and early 70’s. They said they will continue to get together for reunions as long as they’re able.
