VERSAILLES, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — An Indiana man was killed Tuesday in Versailles, Ind., after an accidental explosion occurred outside of his rural home, the Indiana Department of Homeland Security said in news release Wednesday.
The man, 83-year-old Kenneth Hayes, was allegedly cutting on a fuel tank outside of his home in the 6100 block of South Benham Road in Versailles when the explosion went off. The explosion ignited a fire that engulfed the nearby garage, Investigators with the Indiana State Fire Marshal said.
Crews from the Versailles and Friendship fire departments were able to prevent the fire from spreading to Hayes’ home.
Hayes died from injuries sustained in the explosion, according the Ripley County Coroner’s Office. His official cause of death is pending an autopsy.
