SULLIVAN, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)– After not being able to play last spring due to COVID-19, the Sullivan Lady Arrows hit the ground running during the 2021 season. Like most teams the team’s ultimate goal is to bring home a state title.
It’s been 36 years since the Lady Arrows last competed for a state championship and if they bring home a win on Saturday it’ll be their first state title in school history.
Brooklyn Riley, catcher for the Lady Arrows, said it’s a surreal feeling.
“It’s amazing. I knew we had a great team,” she said. “But I really didn’t think we’d make it this far. I figured we’d get past sectionals. Maybe make it past regionals. But getting through semi-state is incredible.”
Avery Wiltermood, short stop for the team, said they’re focused on getting ready for Saturday.
“We’re under a lot of pressure but I think we’re pretty loose,” she said. “We are proud of where we’ve gotten, but we’re not done yet. We just want to make our community and our school proud.”
After being down five runs in the 7th inning at semi-state on Saturday, the Lady Arrows found a way to pull out a win. Coach Lela Early said it’s been a long journey leading up to this moment, but she believes the girls will rise to the occasion.
“We have had so much local support,” she said. “Our community has been fantastic. I can’t brag on them enough. Our local businesses have done special things for us. Several fans have done special things for us and that just keeps the girls motivated to do more because they really want to do more to please everyone and bring home a state championship trophy.”
