FARMERSBURG, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – 10 years ago on Tuesday’s date, April 27, 2021, was the peak of a four day tornado outbreak that’s one of the deadliest in U.S. history.
Until April of 2011, three entire years crept by without a single EF5 tornado touching down anywhere in the country.
But then the three-day tornado outbreak, April 25th-28th, stuck, now known as the Super Outbreak of 2011. This is one of the largest, deadliest, and most destructive tornado outbreaks recorded in U.S. history.
According to the National Weather Service, 362 tornadoes were confirmed. Out of those, 207 were on April 27 alone, and four of those were given an EF5 rating, which is the strongest on the Enhanced Fujita Scale. Any tornado given an EF2 rating or higher, is considered “significant.”
Three hundred nineteen deaths and more than 2,800 injuries were an outcome of the Super Outbreak of 2011.
Meteorologists were predicting a very active spring in 2011, and looking at weather patterns and analogue years, this spring and summer are looking very similar to the season of 2011.
As we head into May, remember, the safest place to be when severe weather hits is indoors, in an interior room on the lowest level, or best-case scenario, a basement.
