TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The “Ryves Youth Rise Up” event raises funds to support activities for the children who come to after school center. This is the fifth year for the event. It will be held virtually.
The fundraiser will be at 7 p.m. Thursday April 8th. Bruce Roselli, a former U.S. bobsledder and current owner of the Terre Haute Rex, will be the keynote speaker.
Bret Ridgway with the Ryves Community Optimist Club says that the center just opened back up to kids March 15th because of the pandemic.
“This is a safe haven for the kids, obviously we’re one of the more impoverished areas in town. So it gives the kids a place to go after school, maybe latch key kids where they can get tutoring, they can get a hot meal, they’ve got a great little library inside for the kids … The recreational area upstairs with the basketball and all that that the kids love to do. So it’s just a good place to hang out where the kids can be safe,” Ridgway said.
Ridgway says funds from the event in the past helped update their computer room, add LED lights, purchase basketball jerseys and fund the “Skype with the Author” program.
