WEST TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The Smithsonian will visit Terre Haute as the history of the city and the Wabash River will be on full display.
Riverscape was selected by Indiana Humanities to host the traveling exhibit that will be located at West Vigo Elementary school between November 20 and December 30 2021.
Fred Nation, vice-president of Riverscape says the history of this body of water is centered around the Wabash River being the largest free flowing river in the state.
“A lot of the industry that we have in this area is because of the Wabash River, the wetlands and the large aquifer,” said Nation.” We want to tell the story so that people understand the importance of water.”
Riverscape was chosen as one of six cities by Indiana Humanities to host the Smithsonian exhibit entitled Water/Ways. The exhibit will include free-standing panels, electronics and hands on materials to interact with.
“The idea is that we want to bring public scholarship that might happen on university campuses and bring that to the public,” said Megan Telligam senior program manager at Indiana Humanities. “We want life-long learning. Conversations that can continue outside of campuses or outside of school.”
To help better tell the story of the Wabash, Riverscape will work with the Vigo County Historical Society, the Vigo County Public Library, Swope Art Museum and the Children’s Museum.
