TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Indiana State University, Ivy Tech Community College, and St. Mary-of-the-Woods College have partnered to host Virtual College Information Week from Jan. 11-14 for high school students and recent graduates. The colleges will talk with students about their interests, answer questions, and offer personalized assistance as students learn about their options for starting classes in spring or summer.
“What we know is that without college representatives in these (high) schools regularly, students are reluctant or don’t have the information to take the next step,” said Leah, Allman, Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Services at Ivy Tech.
During the virtual events, high school students and their parents can get free help filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), learn about educational options, and transfer pathways. Students will also have the option to get one-on-one assistance applying to their colleges of choice.
“We’re approaching deadlines for FAFSA, for scholarship consideration, so now is the time to take action on your post-secondary plan and we think these events will make an impact moving students through those steps,” Allman said.
Virtual College Information Week’s schedule has Linton, Shakamak, Sullivan, White River Valley high schools participating on Monday, Jan. 11. On Tuesday, Jan. 12, students from Parke Heritage, Riverton Parke, Clay City and Northview are encouraged to take part. North and South Vermillion, West Vigo and Vigo Virtual are invited on Wednesday, Jan. 13, while Terre Haute North and South and Booker T. Washington are scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 14. However, students who can’t participate on their school’s assigned date can do so on any day.
Students who wish to enter the workforce quickly can learn about tuition-free short-term certificates offered through Indiana’s Next Level Jobs program. The certificates count toward associate degrees and potentially transfer to bachelor’s degree programs. This offers students a pathway to careers that will benefit them in the short-term, and college degrees which will benefit them in the long-term.
