VIGO Co., Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Indiana State Police is recognizing one of their troopers for saving the life of a West Terre Haute man Saturday morning.
It happened just before 3 a.m.
They said Trooper Gerald Stump was on a normal patrol on Cherry Street over the Wabash River bridge when he saw a man collapsed over the concrete barrier of the bridge, facing the river, and with his feet off of the ground.
They said Stump approached the man, trying to get a response from him. When he noticed the man was not responding, Stump lifted him from the concrete barrier and placed him on solid ground. The man then became responsive.
Stump placed the man into his patrol car for warmth, before the man was taken to the hospital by medics.
Stump learned the man was under the influence of alcohol and controlled substances, so he convinced the man to be self-admitted into a medical facility for care and treatment.
The Indiana State Police called Trooper Stump’s actions “selfless.”
