VIGO Co., Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The first snow of the season kept officials busy watching the roadways on Wednesday.
According to Indiana State Police, they responded two a fatal crash and around 9 other accidents.
In Vigo County, Sheriff John Plasse said they saw five accidents and one slide-off.
Vigo County’s highway director said it was all hands on deck Tuesday night, making sure roads were safe as possible.
“We try to work with the sheriff’s department. They have deputies out all night long. If they feel like the road is in a situation where we need to mobilize to get treated and the snow doesn’t look like it’s going to stop, then they’re going to call us out,” said Larry Robbins.
Police said although the first snow seemed small, safety is still important.
“Just because the speed limit says 70 miles an hour doesn’t mean you can travel 70 miles an hour. You need to reduce your speed,” said Indiana State Police Sergeant Matt Ames.
Meanwhile, Deming Park in Terre Haute was full of people taking advantage of the weather.
10-year-old Aubrey said she couldn’t wait to get out into the first snow of the year.
Nearby were three friends who go to middle school in Vigo County. They said for them the snow was a nice break from a tough school year.
