TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – A local man who escaped Nazi Germany and now shares his story at a Terre Haute museum will be celebrating his 100th birthday soon.
CANDLES Holocaust Museum wants to collect 100 cards for Walter Sommers’ 100th birthday on December 29.
Sommers was born in Frankfurt, Germany in 1920. His family was Jewish and in 1939 they left the country for their safety and came to the United States.
Sommers then served in the U.S. Army fighting in the Pacific front.
Museum Director Leah Simpson says he has done so much for the museum and the community.
She says the effort to collect 100 cards is a special way to celebrate his birthday even if they can’t gather in-person this year.
People can mail cards to the museum. Address it to Walter Sommers, CANDLES Holocaust Museum and Education Center, 1532 South Third St, Terre Haute, IN 47802
