TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Terre Haute city council approved a $13 million bond for the new police department building.
The bond will be used to acquire the old Tribune-Star building which will be the home of the new police station. The bond will help to upgrade the building with a new garage, furniture and IT equipment.
“Our goal is to make the building open 24 hours a day, similar to what is and make it more open and usable to the public,” Terre Haute Police Chief Shawn Keen stated. “You’ll be able to come in both doors with our current design. It will still offer a layer of security to the personnel that works inside the building.”
Mayor Duke Bennett said he hopes to have Garmong Construction Services begin construction in December.
“I’m pretty excited. I’ve been working on this project since 2009 when I was assistant chief and it means a lot,” Keen explained. “Been working towards this resolution for a long time and I think today we’ve just overcome a pretty big milestone in that project.”
Mayor Bennett said he is extremely happy and thankful for the unanimous support from the board.
