TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — An Illinois man is now facing charges related to the April death of his girlfriend’s 18-month-old child in Terre Haute.
Chad A. Nichols, 20, of Georgetown, Illinois was arrested in Illinois earlier this month on a Vigo County warrant for neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury. He was later extradited to Indiana, and on Thursday, charges were upgraded to murder and aggravated battery.
Nichols was living in Terre Haute with his girlfriend and her two children when an ambulance was called to the residence for the 18-month-old who had stopped breathing. The child later died at the hospital.
According to court records, an autopsy showed the child suffered from multiple blunt force injuries to the head.
A Feb. 8 trial has been set in the case.
