VERMILLION Co., Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A man is in the hospital after Indiana State Police said a chased led to an officer-involved shooting Sunday morning.
They said the incident happened around 4:30 a.m. on State Road 63 at U.S. 36, just north of Clinton.
According to police, a Vigo County Sheriff’s Deputy saw a car speeding northbound in the area of Third Street and Margaret Drive in Terre Haute around 4:22 a.m.
They said the deputy turned on his emergency lights to initiate a stop, when the chase began. The chase continued north on to State Road 63, reaching speeds up to 120 miles per hour.
Police said several agencies were able to get ahead of the chase and deploy a tire deflation device at the intersection of State Road 63 and Hazelbluff Road. They said the suspect car hit the device, flattening the tires.
According to police, the suspect then began shooting at officers through the window, hitting one of their cars.
“As the pursuit was ongoing the individual turned around and shot at the police vehicles behind him and striking one of the deputies vehicles as they continued going northbound,” said Sgt. Matt Ames, Public Information Officer for Indiana State Police.
They said the suspect then drove away on the deflated tires, until he lost control and left the roadway at the exit ramp of State Road 63 and U.S. 36.
Police said the man got out of the vehicle and after refusing to release the gun, he shot at officers.
They said several officers shot their guns in return, hitting and injuring the suspect.
They identified the suspect as 23-year-old Omaree Shay Roby of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
According to police, Roby was given medical assistance at the scene before being taken to Union Hospital in Clinton and later flown to Indianapolis.
Ames said everyone’s willingness to respond ensured the community’s safety.
“We’re here in the Wabash Valley to provide a safe environment for everyone. We had multiple agencies go through two different counties. Everyone heard that shots were fired and they responded to take care of the public and the other officers that were on the scene.”
Police said Roby had stolen a vehicle from Evansville, where he’d allegedly carjacked a person by forcing them out of the vehicle with a gun through shooting in the air.
The investigation is ongoing.
Upon completion of their investigation, Indiana State Police detectives will submit a full report of the incident to the Vermillion County Prosecutor’s Office for review and determination of charges filed.
