TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — One person is dead and 2 others were sent to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after an early morning shooting at an off-campus college party in Terre Haute.
Terre Haute Police Chief Shawn Keen identified the person killed as 18-year-old Valentina Delva from Indianapolis.
Friday at around 1:55 A.M, Terre Haute Police Chief Shawn Keen says dispatch received calls of a female that was shot near 6th and Ohio Street.
“Our officers responded and located a vehicle that was just south of Ohio and 6th Street, and a female passenger in that vehicle was found to have a gunshot wound,” Keen said.
After medics arrived to the scene, they determined that 18 year old ISU student Valentina Delva had died.
According to Keen, Delva was attending a house party at 321 South 6th Street just before she was shot.
“Based on witness statements there was approximately between 50 and 100 people at this party,” Keen said.
Keen says as officers arrived at the location of the party they learned that several others were also wounded.
“Idenitfied 20 people that came out that were still at the house at that point and one of those people also had a gunshot wound. While they were investigating that we got a report from union hospital that another male had walked in with a gunshot wound,” Keen said.
Although dozens are estimated to have attended the party where the shooting stemmed, Keen says police have not received much cooperation from witnesses.
He is asking anyone who knows information on the shooting to come forward to bring justice for the victims.
“Ultimately we have an 18 year old who i want to call a kid because that’s a child, that’s someone who hasn’t lived their life yet. All she did was a passenger in a car, that’s all she did and she lost her life. That’s what I want people to think about more than worrying about what someone’s going to think of me if I tell on someone,” Keen said.
“Indiana State University is saddened to report that earlier this morning, an off campus shooting incident occurred in the vicinity of 6th and Poplar Streets involving students from ISU,” the college confirmed in a written statement.
The college went on to state that “[d]uring this anxious time for members of our campus community, counseling services are available. As some students are grieving, the university asks faculty for their understanding and flexibility.”
Five were arrested during the police investigation of the shooting on unrelated charges. Duane Cobb, Eudrice Leflore, Carlton Gray, Monquel Bates and Markia McCutchen were held for possession of marijuana and maintaining a common nuisance, police announced on Facebook.
