TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)– The Hamilton Center hosted their annual Diversity Walk Saturday.
The group met at Fairbanks Park and drove down Wabash Avenue to the Indiana State Memorial Stadium.
The walk has been around since 2014. Theresa Ortega participates in the walk often.
She said she connects with the event on a personal level.
“For me it’s personal I grew up in another country. I have a lot of empathy for people who are trying to navigate their way through a foreign country, learning a different language. I remember being that little kid,” Ortega said.
Due to COVID-19 concerns, participants were asked to drive in their cars instead of walking to allow social distancing.
Local agencies such as the Vigo County Library, Terre Haute Police department, and Terre Haute Fire Department attended the Walk on Wheels.
Indiana State Senator Jon Ford also participated.
“We decided that we needed this coming out of a community plan a number of years ago and it just continues to grow. It shows that we’re all here to support each other. The diversity of our community coming together to support one another is a beautiful thing to see. ”
