TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology announces a change to its admissions process that college officials say will create new opportunities for prospective students.
The college has made a one-year exception to its requirement of a standardized test score for admission. This applies to the admissions process that opened August 1.
The change is due to the impact the pandemic had on students’ opportunities to take the SAT or ACT.
Rose-Hulman also says admissions officials will be paying closer attention to students’ experiences, behaviors and characteristics through their application essays and letters of recommendation. The college says this is because students’ academic transcripts may have been impacted by high schools switching to pass/fail grading, switching to online learning only or closing their doors entirely in the spring. High school extracurricular and athletic activities have also been significantly impacted.
“We’re taking a holistic view of the entire college admissions process,” says Thomas Bear, Rose-Hulman’s vice president for enrollment management. “We’re reviewing non-traditional avenues to evaluate whether a prospective student has the specific skillset to be successful in the rigorous science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) academic environment that we offer.”
Rose-Hulman says it will continue to maintain a high academic admissions standard when reviewing students’ applications.
The college’s Early Action application deadline is November 1.
