TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Terre Haute Regional airport recently received a $10,000 dollar grant from Duke Energy. The money will be going toward a strategic plan focused on the continued development of Terre Haute’s east side.
The airport is working to ensure new businesses are in compliance with Federal Aviation Administration standards. It’s called the Airport Gateway Strategic Plan.
“What a lot of people don’t realize with the city and the county are there’s certain restrictions. Height restrictions, noise restrictions, things like that when you’re near an airport,” said Terre Haute Regional Airport Executive Director Jeff Hauser.
The board of directors plays a role in development within a five-mile radius of the airport, including the casino coming to the east side.
“We worked through where the actual facility was and kind of moved it over a bit to make sure it wasn’t in an area it shouldn’t have been in. We worked with them on the lighting,” said the airport’s director of operations, Kara McIntosh.
The plan also looks into new projects and expansion on the airport’s property, like aviation businesses.
“We have the restaurant area downstairs at the airport. So we’re actually opening that up,” Hauser said.
And the ultimate goal is creating one plan than all new businesses will be able to follow.
“Just to make sure that the whole area is a cohesive plan with the same set of rules for everybody,” said McIntosh.
A draft of the plan is scheduled to be complete in September.
