WEST TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — Authorities have positively identified the man who was found dead following an exchange of gunfire with area law enforcement Saturday in West Terre Haute.
Following an autopsy Monday, the Vigo County Coroner’s Office identified the man as 51-year-old Errol K. Bolin. Family has been notified, according to authorities.
The incident began around 7:20 a.m. Saturday when Vigo County Central Dispatch received a 911 call in reference to a suspicious person in a rural area of West Terre Haute. Vigo County Sheriff’s deputies investigated the area and found a vehicle down a lane that had the rear window busted out.
When the deputies attempted to make contact by using a PA system, Bolin began to shoot at the them, according to information provided by Indiana State Police. They immediately took cover and called for assistance.
Bolin continued to fire randomly at the officers, and was believed to be heading north through the wooded area. When officers ordered Bolin to put down the weapon and to show hands, he shot directly at them, and gun fire was exchanged.
When the Terre Haute Special Response Team arrived at the scene with an armored vehicle,they discovered Bolin was deceased.
