TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Terre Haute Police officers shot and injured the passenger of a vehicle who brandished a firearm during a traffic stop around midnight Thursday, according to Indiana State Police.
State police are investigating the incident that began with a traffic stop at 6270 Wabash Avenue in Terre Haute.
Shortly after making the stop, a Terre Haute police officer requested assistance. When other officers arrived on scene, a physical altercation with the passenger quickly ensued. When the passenger pulled out a firearm, Sgt. Adam Loudermilk and Patrol Officer Daniel L. Johnson discharged their weapons resulting in the passenger being injured, according to an ISP news release.
The passenger was taken to Regional Hospital in Terre Haute with non life-threatening injuries. The person currently remains hospitalized.
One THPD officer was also transported to Regional Hospital where he was treated and released.
Loudermilk and Johnson have been placed on administrative leave, which is customary in police-involved shootings. An ISP investigation is underway.
