TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – Superintendent Rob Haworth reveals 2020-2025 strategic plan for the Vigo County School Corporation. The plan includes initiatives to improve technology, upgrade school buildings, and spending cuts.
The Vigo County School Corporation is no stranger to challenges.
Their biggest challenge is declining enrollment which impacts funding.
“Much like the rest of the state of Indiana is experiencing, especially in rural communities, the shrinking of their school population,” said superintendent Rob Haworth, Vigo County School Corporation.
To meet this challenge, during Monday’s school board meeting, Haworth presented the corporation’s strategic plan designed for the next five years.
This plan includes improvements to technology, fiscal responsibility, and better school facilities.
“A key aspect of that plan is an eight year facility plan. A big part of that will be about the high schools, but we do need to address middle schools and elementary schools as well,” Haworth said.
Haworth to accomplish these goals, collaboration with the community is needed.
“Schools cannot do it all alone. We need the support of our families. We need the support of non-profit agencies,” Haworth said.
With the community’s help, Haworth hopes that the school corporation and Vigo County can both grow.
“Our hope here is that our strategic plan and our approach to waiting-in and trying to meet our community wherever we can and collaborate that we can be one of the eight or nine communities that will begin to grow in the state of Indiana,” Haworth said.
Haworth’s strategic plan also includes each student having a Google Chromebook by the summer of 2023.
Haworth also says spending cuts which were approved by the board last month will play a big part in the corporation’s future.
The plan must be approved by the Vigo County School Board.
Board president Hank Irwin says they plan to approve the plan at the next meeting on February 24th.
