ROBINSON Ill. (WTWO/WAWV) -Robinson Chief of Police, Chad Weaver, said there has been a lot of confusion surrounding the new Illinois law not just in the city, but in the state as a whole.
“A lot of people thought that all cannabis was legalized and that’s not the case,” Weaver said. “It’s not the cannabis that somebody bought from their regular drug dealer. They can’t legally possess that now, it’s still against the law.”
Weaver said the transition from illegal to legal has been rough, but said he thinks it will get easier as the year progresses.
Weaver said legal purchase of marijuana will come in an odorless container, making it relatively easy for an officer to know its origin.
He said the container must have the seal in-tact in order for it to be in a motorized vehicle.
Sgt. Eric Schmidt with the Robinson Police Department said anything other than the sealed container will omit an odor.
“Some may think that a plastic bag is odor-proof but it’s absolutely not,” Schmid said. “Then more importantly it’s not sealed either so anybody transporting cannabis in any sort of bags like this would not be in compliance with with Illinois law.”
Weaver said anyone found in illegal possession of marijuana will be issued a citation and the items will then be confiscated.
