TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – There’s a small neighborhood in Terre Haute known as The Trades. It’s called that because it was built by Vigo County students learning the building trade.
Those students showed the community Wednesday the newest house that’s taking shape in the neighborhood.
The Trades subdivision is just north of College Avenue on S 29th Street. Each home is built by students in Vigo County Schools’ six-trimester building course.
Students from North, South and West Vigo High Schools are enrolled in the program.
“This is a six trimester course. If they can complete it their junior or senior year, then we do have a $2,000 scholarship good for any state, any institution and we immediately get them into the carpenters union at an advanced rate,” says Kevin McCrea who is the instructor of the class.
This newest home is the seventh house being built in the neighborhood.
